12:43 pm - the whole thing
|
I know I said I was hiatus from this thing but I too wanted to get in on "Marisa's Internet Meme".
To get this to go even further maybe you should do it on facebook, and label things on your desk as friends... people love those kooky things.
So here is my annotated desk courtesy of Blurry McCameraphone, plus a bonus 3 photos of the rest of my office, so you can see how messy it/I really is/am.
( desk set )
I'm trying to do this through the internet iron curtain so I have no idea if this will post correctly.
Update: Sorry about the giant pictures, they should be more reasonably sized now

i'm killing time at the dmv, so it seems like a good time for an update post.
The basement project that has been taking up most of my free time is just about done. The carpet was installed this week. The painting and ceilibg are all done. There are just a few minor touch up to do. So we will start habitating it very soon. Gillian is already doing laps around the room.
Its good that it is done because we have a bust august. We are making a trip tothe cape next weekend. Then going to saratoga the following week. The next weeken we need to get the house and yard ready for Gillian's first birthday. Its going to be a small party but there are still.a few preparations to be done. Its hard to believe its almost been a year.
okay my thumbs are cramping, thats all for now.

well its been 4 months, time for another update.
In my defense, my office caught me circumventing the web filter, to get to some fairly innocuous website (like LJ and Gillian's blog). Oops. It took them 2 years to catch on. So I haven't been able to post from work.
I've been working on re-finishing the basement. As Gillian gets more mobile and gets more stuff, we need more room. The basement was finished already by very 70's era. The basement is pretty big so it almost takes me a 8-11 hours to do one coat. Because the walls were dark paneling I had to do 2 coats of primer and 2 of the finish color. We have 3.5 coats done. I should finish that this weekend.
Amy surprised me a few weeks back by getting us a Wii and Guitar Hero. Then we picked up a Wii Fit. So honestly that has slowed the progress in the basement a bit. :) But we've been enjoying it. Wii Fit is interesting in that its accountability over your weight, without having to go to meeting or anything. The graph is pretty clear that what your trend is and the games are fun enough to keep you interested.
We are headed out to the Finger Lakes at the end of the month for vacation. Its a 6hr+ drive which should be interesting with a 9 month year old.
Otherwise not much going on, but Gillian seems to make things pretty busy.

12:19 pm - Its a New Record!
|
I believe this is my personnel record drought for Live Journal Entries.
Well since August what's happened? Let's see we celebrated my birthday, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year.
The Red Sox won the World Series.
The Patriots lost the Super Bowl.
The WGA strike started and ended
The candidates for the upcoming election have been all but picked.
Personally, lets see.... I had my car break down in a snow storm (twice), it only took me 20 hours to get home. That was a good story.
Amy broke her finger, and it was kind of my fault. Not such a good story, but she is much better now.
Finished the kitchen overhaul (well 98% finished).
Um... Oh yeah, we had a baby. Yeah. She is 5 months old now. Heck she is even christened and free of that pesky original sin!
So needless to say, its been a while. I don't have a real good excuse for my lack of updates. I'm usually tied up in something at home and when I'm not I usually just want to crash on the couch. The only extended period of free time I have are really my lunch hours. And I usually spend that catching up on the 42 blogs in my RSS reader. Its kind of an addiction.
But I decided set aside lunch today to get this entry done.
So little Ms. Gillian is doing great, and is great. We have been pretty lucky. She sleeps through the night most nights now. Shes pretty even keeled, so not alot of extended crying.
I could tell you everything thing she is doing or has done, but "she" has a blog which she updates way more often then I do mine. Pretty much weekly. See that here.
Plus her life is much more interesting then mine. Not that I'm complaining, I don't mind the homebody Dad lifestyle. I'm sure as she gets older things will get crazy again.
Well thats all I got. Now that I've broken the seal on the journal, maybe I'll get back into it.

Well its been an embarrassingly long period time since my last update. I'd like to think I have some good excuses.
Since we last talked I did move into my new house. We've been busy working away on updated. The house was in good condition, just in major need of some updating.
So far we (we being a rotating crew of Amy, Amy's Parents, My parents, friends from URI, & myself) have: Replaced all the carpeting painted every inch of wall and trim replaced every outlet replaced all the lights (and rewired them to work on switches) replaced every heat/ac register Replaced all the fixtures in the bathroom replaced 4 out of 8 doors (I'll get to those other 4 some day, sure two of the bedrooms have no doors but hey doors are overrated)
The kitchen has been the major project. We are on the home stretch tho. So far this has entailed: Removed the cabinets and countertop Removed all the flooring (all 3 layers) removed nasty blue paneling from walls Adding 5 new electrical circuit Moving the drain pipe replacing all the water supply lines Moving a heating duct Had the new cabinets installed (we had someone do this, but in retrospect I should have just done it myself, long frustrating story) Had new vinyl floor installed. Put up beadboard wainscoting. Put up chair rail molding Installed over range microwave.
In the next two weeks, I hope to... Install countertop Install and plumb the sink Install Dishwasher. Tile backsplash Install and plumb stove (gas).
As some of you probably know Amy is pregnant (very, at this point). So I have a bit of a deadline in getting this stuff done (and a floating deadline at that)
Amy is doing well. She finished up work a little over a week ago. So she's been able to relax at home. She's 37+ weeks along at this point, which technically means the baby could come at any day. The official due date is August 28th.
She has a birth date pool going, if anyone wants to throw in their guess, we'll add you to the list. We are recording: Date, Time, Gender, Weight and Length. Some might say you are at a disadvantage because you haven't "seen" Amy in a while, but I'm sure your guesses will be just as valid as mine.
We are of course excited (and a little nervous time to time!).
Since I've been so busy, I haven't really taken in much in the entertainment field. Books: I get alot of magazines, so I end up reading those often, which is kind of depressing when I think about it. Between being busy and tired when I go to bed, I just haven't been reading books much. I did read Harry Potter. The ending was pretty good, but the beginning/middle was far too long and slow.
Movies: We did see the Harry Movie (Amy won sneak preview tickets, for Imax 3D). And really the only other movie I've seen this summer was Simpsons. FYI, I saw the Spider Pig song was available for download as a ringtone on my cell the other day. I do want to try to get out to Bourne Ultimatum some point soon.
TV: Since the move I've been through 3 cable tv mediums. Dish, Traditional and now FIOS. The dish was partially blocked by my trees so I had to get rid of that. I got traditional analog cable for a week, and then Verizon rolled out FIOS TV, so I switched to that. Their triple play is about what I was paying before individually, but with more channels, faster internet, and unlimited long distance. So far its pretty nice, seems better then other digital cable I've used in the past.
I dropped my Tivo service, for a Fios DVR to save some bucks (plus the TIVO didn't work great with the fios cable box). The FIOS DVR interface is horrible, so I miss my Tivo in that respect, and we both miss the suggestions, but we'll deal.
Lately I've just been watching alot of DIY Ch, Discovery Science Ch/ and Baseball.
Music: As it is baseball season, I have been taking in my guilty pleasure that is sports talk radio, so I haven't been listening to all that much music. I'm not sure why I like listening to it, most of the hosts and callers are idiots and just yell alot. I guess its like a car wreck for me.
Traveling for work hasn't been too bad since the move, I'm getting used to it. I cruise in about a hour in the morning as it is so early (5:45ish) and the evening commute usually takes about 1.5 hrs, as I take 295 to avoid Providence. I will admit if I'm doing something boring at work, it is a bit harder to get myself motivated in the morning. But bottom line is its working (for now).
Speaking of work... I should probably get to work for the day.

Because things are pretty much a done deal at this point, my fear of the LJ jinx (distant cousin of the SI Jinx) is low.
So I'm free to mention that here that we are set to close on selling and buying houses on Friday. So as of Friday afternoon I will be officially moved to Warwick, RI.
I'm in full on packing and moving mode right now. My cardboard box detecting senses are at full power, so much so that I think I'm going to have a ton of extra boxes. We spent the whole weekend packing, and I think we have 95% of our stuff packed. You don't realize how much crap you own until you try to pack it.
Thursday is moving day number one, as everything needs to be out of the house for Friday morning. So I got the biggest moving truck they would let me drive, so we can pack everything in one place. So hopefully the truck with all our worldly possessions doesn't get stolen over night (Am I tempting the Jinx here?)
After we finish both closings on Friday we'll be able to start unloading the truck into the new house, and it will probably keep unloading into Saturday.
Moving from Apartment to Apartment or even Apartment to House isn't too bad but the logistics of House to House is really a pain.
Its going to be pretty busy in my world for a while.

3:16 pm - "We spent the night last night in Newport News..."
|
It will be more like 19 nights. After an all too short 3 weeks back at home, I'm headed back to Virgina on Sunday, for my (and the jobs) last tour on the CVN70.
The good news is this should be my last trip of this kind until 2011 (if that even happens). Hopefully it will be a bit warmer down there, and when I get back to the Northeast it should be warmer here.
Oh, well, the stupid crap I do for money.

3:34 pm - Not dead, Just in Newport News, Virginia
|
While extended absences from me posting are common, I meant to mention that I would be out of town for about 3 weeks, largely out of internet contact. I'm off on my company's biannual, Naval Steam Generator Robotic Cleaning effort. Three weeks of 13 hour work days, 7 days a week. It sucks but the money is good. This time we are on the USS Carl Vinson, clearly not as much notable name recognition as the USS Enterprise we were on last time. We spend most of our day in a little plywood office in the area that is normally used to store missiles and other various ordnances.
The good news is I only have a week left, the bad news is I have to go back for another 3 weeks, after a 3 week break. Oh, well.

2:09 pm - I needed an Editor not a Chef.
|
Saturday night I had a craving for some brownies. We didn't have any mix and I didn't feel like running out for it. So I figured I'd look in one of my new cook books I got for Christmas and see if it had a from scratch brownie recipe. Sure enough it did, and I had all the ingredients it needed. While I enjoy cooking, I'm not the best baker, but I figured I'd give it a shot.
So I start prepping all the ingredients, and I come to the step that says "Steep the Cocoa Powder in the Boiling Water". Okay, How much water? There is a table with all the ingredients at the top of the recipe, I find the boiling water entry and go to the amount column to find instead of a number the letters "tk".
I start mulling this over, what does “tk” mean. A "tea kettle" full, or maybe "to cover" (and they use a k for some reason). Maybe its a acronym specific too the book, so I start reading though the first chapter on notation, and I don't find anything on "tk". Finally I just decide to wing it and mix the cocoa with what seems like enough water, and finish the rest of it and throw it in the oven.
While its baking, I decide to get on the computer and see if I can find what "tk" means. I find other people trying to make the same recipe and figure out what the mysterious "tk" means. Some are explaining their disastrous results making said brownies. So I'm starting to get a little worried. I then find this in the wikipedia: '"To Come" is a printing and journalism reference abbreviated "TK." It is used to signify additional material will be added at a later date.' Ut Oh. Now I understand why no one can figure this out this recipe.
With some more search I find the errata for the book, curious to find that the actual amount is suppose to be. Maybe I was close. Turns out that wasn't the only problem with the recipe, in fact it is being complete re-written for the next revision of the book. And the way I made them is no where near the new method.
Needless to say the brownies did not come out well. They were edible, but I wouldn't serve them to anyone.
I figured that all you writer type people might get a kick out of that, and probably would have known to bail on the recipe before it was too late.

1:51 pm - Holiday Egg Nog Update
|
Egg Nog is still delicious in all its heart attack inducing greatness. There seem to be alot of Egg nog spin off's this season. I have tried a few.
Hood Pumpkin Egg Nog: Seemingly a good idea, I particularly enjoy both egg nog and pumpkin pie. How ever the combination of the two is not as great as it sounds. While it taste's okay, but the more i had it the more I didn't want to drink it, and just wanted to find some good ol' nog. This experience has kept me from trying the Cinnamon Nog, as I don't want to be wasting valuable nog drinking time on inferior product.
Edy's Egg Nog Ice Cream: A logical step as egg nog is pretty much a custard, and you churn a custard to get ice cream. (yeah, I watch the food network a bit, and we have a ice cream maker, I know this sort of thing now). It tastes like you would think a big frozen bowl of egg nog. The conversion of form holds up pretty well, and its enjoyable to eat.
However, Overall I think I would just rather down a quart of regular egg nog. Next year I'm going to try to get into making my own traditional egg nog (read as "Jeff gets salmonella next year").
A few Non-Nog related bits:
Fans of the Sawmobile should check out the "King of all Sawmobiles". It eats bulldozers!
Whats the deal with all the No DJ "random" song radio? Are listeners responding to this or are radio station just being cheap?
I will only being making a short trip to Saratoga for Christmas. Coming into town on the 23rd, and leaving early Christmas morning, to get to Christmas festivities at Amy's Parents. So I'll probably won't catch most of you. So Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone early.

I made it back from Maryland, in exact opposite fashion that I arrived. Smooth sailing the whole way, and it took a sleek 6 Hours and 20 minutes.
The wedding was nice. In the be careful what you wish for department, the food was very high end, almost too much so. They had alot of different things, all in little portions and all very gourmet. They seemed to have a mini theme, appetizers included mini tarts, mini hamburgers, and mini crab sandwiches. They even had mini ice cream cones after dinner.
There was also top shelf open bar, I felt kinda bad putting coke in high end whiskey, (but did it anyway), and they had no tequila, I guess tequila is low class but I wanted a margarita dammit.
I don't have anything to complain about really, it was a very nice wedding. In retrospect it was probably too long a ways to travel for a wedding of someone we only have a casual acquaintance with. Lesson learned.
So I think we are through with traveling for a while (until Thanksgiving). Now I have to catch up on everything that needs to be done around the house, that I haven't been able to do in three weekends.

10:13 am - Liveblogging from Maryland
|
We must have angered the car gods some how or because of the smoothness of our NY trip, they needed payback.
We ended up leaving Mass. at about 1. I had split our journey into 2 legs on the GPS so it would take me the way I wanted. The first leg was to the other side of the Tappan Zee bridge. It was suppose to take 3 hours. WE got through Ma, & RI no problems and then when we got into CT, we started to see a potential problem looming. Every so often we would see a electronic sign that said "Emergency Road Work, Exits 34-32, 1 Lane Open, Expect Delays". We quite a ways away from that point so there wasn't much we could do except keep going. Eventually at exit 42, we hit a wall of stopped traffic. We crawled alone at an Average speed of 3 Mph (the GPS keeps track of this sort of thing). I made one futile attempt to get off the highway and take back roads. These were even worse, so we just got back on the highway. At about hour 2 of sitting in this traffic we were near homicidal. We said for all this delay their better be deal bodies on the highway, or the missing two lanes have fallen into the ocean. At hour 2.5 we found out what the cause of the delay was. As we drove by the work crew on a bridge, 10 guys were all in a circle watching one guy on his hands and knee, trowel cement into a pothole. A POTHOLE, and because of that pothole it took us near 3 hours to do 11 miles! The bonus was because of the delay it put us right into the greater NYC area right during rush hour. So it took us an extra hour to get over the bridge. That one great feature of a GPS, it easy to figure out exactly how much time you've wasted.
Things were going pretty smooth through the first part of the Nuje. Then we saw one of these wonderful sign on the overpass, with the directions to "Reduce Speed", the sign also had a selection of about 20 words it could light up to explain the speed reduction, we were given the helpful information of "Congestion Ahead". Shortly after that we hit another wall of cars. We muddled through this for a few miles and then stopped at a rest stop for bathrooms and Gas. This rest stop looked like the Mall, 2 days before Christmas their were so many people there. I felt like I was at a concert or sporting event, how I had to push through people to get to the bathroom. Do people in New Jersey have nothing better to do then go to a high way rest stop on Friday night? At the gas station their were at least 50 cars waiting (probably because there is only one guy there who can run the full service pumps). So we said screw that we'll find gas somewhere else. And got back onto the highway and the gridlocked traffic. We continued in this stop and go traffic for about an hour plus, when we finally saw police and fire cleaning up teh rubble of a smothering car. I guess the overpass sings don't have "Car Fire Ahead" indicators. Another note about New Jersey, I glad to see they honor great people like Edison, Walt Whitman, Clara Barton, by naming High Way Rest Stops after them. You stay classy, Nuje.
Things were okay for the most part, we hit a little construction in Delaware, but it was minor in the scheme of things. Eventually we go to our hotel at 11:30. If your counting (and we were) that's 10.5 hours on the road, on what should have been a 6.5-7 hour journey.
Amy has already declared she is never coming back to CT, NJ, NYC or MD for any reason, by any means of transportation. This wedding better be freaking great, they need dancing elephants, fillet mignon and lobster for dinner, and top shelf open bar at least!
We are thinking if we are lucky we can hit traffic from a couple of pro football teams on the way home, so that should be great. And then its off to work for us on Monday because we don't get Columbus Day off.
Otherwise I'm doing fine.

We got back on Saturday from a weeks vacation. For our second anniversary we rented a lake house on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. We decided to opt for some place we could drive to rather then fly, plus as our anniversary is in the heart of hurricane season it seems like a bad time to head south too much. So of Amy's co-workers had just been out that way for a wedding, and had a good time and I've never really been there. Plus it seemed like our kind of vacation, laid back, lots to explore, and just relaxing.
The house ended up being very nice; we rented via the Internet so we had only seen pictures. It was clean and up kept, with great views of the lake. The house was up above water, so there was a network of decks that went down to the dock at the shore, which all had great views as well.
( The View )
We spent a lot of time driving around, the trip totally justified the purchase of the Car GPS, it made thing incredible easy and hassle free to go anywhere, and change your mind on the way there.
When we were not driving we spent the rest of time hiking the various gorges, and waterfalls of the area. They are pretty impressive.
On our first day of real sightseeing, we accidentally ended up at Taughannock Falls. It's actually the tallest water fall in the northeast, at 215 feet (which makes it 40 feet taller then Niagara)
( Taughannock )
On the way out the NY State police had a road block set up in the state park and were stopping every car that went through. They had made several cars pull over, and were letting most of them through. We weren't really sure what was going on. When we got up to them, they tried to hassle us for not have a Registration sticker on our front license plate. What they failed to know was that in Mass. you only get 1 registration sticker and it goes on your back plate. They let us through after I explained. It looks like they were just trying to round up some end of the month ticket quotas. Way to encourage use of State Parks and local tourism, NY State
Another Gorges we hiked were Watkins Glen which is probably the most interesting in the multitude of impressive features. Its about 1.5 miles through the gorge, with someting like 19 water falls. Here just one such feature.
( Watkins )
We also did the Enfield Glen at Treman state park. This park was interesting because of a slight navigational error on my part. I put us on the right trail; unfortunately it was at the wrong end of the park. So instead of a leisurely walk along the gorge, I put us on a straight up climb to the top of the gorge. By the time I realized something must has been wrong, we were both near having heart attacks, or needing knee replacements. Eventually we got to the right side of the park (via car), and saw some more falls there.
( Lucifer Falls )
Our travels took us near Ithaca a few times so we had a few good meals there. Mexican for lunch at Viva's and a very excellent dinner at Maxie's Supper Club. One of Amy's coworkers insisted that if we get to Ithaca that we had to go to Wegman's. Now I have heard many stories of the wonders of Wegman's before, but have never been to one or understood the love for it, so we went there after dinner to do some shopping. Well I have to admit it’s a pretty impressive store, and this was probably the best grocery store I had ever been in. As someone who likes to cook, they had a great selection of different cuts/varieties of meat, poultry and fish. Plus a ton of other ingredients that are really hard to find at the average supermarket. I was disappointed that I was only shopping for snacks for the rest of the trip. Also at 8pm on a Thursday it was busiest, most hopping place we had seen all week.
We were staying in the heart of wine country. There was a vineyard across the street from our road, and there were literally 15 vineyards in less then a mile in either direction. We went to do the bulk of our wine tasting on Friday which ended up being bit of a mistake. The wineries had been open but dead all week. On Friday however there were quite a few of "booze bus" tasting tours. We got to the first one just as one bus was getting ready to leave and another was arriving. The first group came out yelling, hooting and stumbling. Apparently they had already been to a few other stops (even though it was barely noon). The incoming bus load beat us inside. So instead of try to deal with the crowd we just bought a bottle that looked good, and tried to get ahead of the buses. We were able too, and there were really only 3 of the top tier vineyards we really wanted to do. It a good thing we only wanted to do a few, as after doing tastings at 2 of them, we were starting to feel a little "loose". We ended up coming home with 7 different bottles, mostly whites (red wine grapes don't grow very well in NY climate). This is an odd trend that seems to happen on our vacations. We came back from our honeymoon with 11 bottles of duty free liquor (most of which is still unopened). We don't really drink very much or that often. But we are very well stocked should the need arise.
The trip home was pretty uneventful, and pretty easy for a 6 hour drive. Its pretty much just 300 miles straight on I90. Through it was made a little tougher by the fact that I was forbidden to sing the Erie Canal song as we drove by parts of it. New Englanders just have no love the Erie.
All that driving was actually just a warm-up for this weekend. We are driving to a Wedding in Baltimore, down on Friday and back on Sunday.

7:18 am - Programming Note
|
I'm back from vacation, and I just haven't had enough time to finish and post a summary, but hopefully I will get it out shortly.
But I quickly wanted to throw out my Studio 60 opinions. I think its all good. Tho I'm do have a fair amount of love for all previous things Sorkin, so take it for what you will. That said I think the back and forth between the actors isn't quite as snappy as it should be, but should likely get better. I always like Sports Night better then West Wing because they both showed you that "behind the scenes" look, but I found the personal interaction between the characters on Sports Night to be a little more interesting and deep. It seems like Studio 60 could go that way and I'm hoping it does.

12:32 am - If you want more updates, you gonna get baseball updates then.
|
So Amy was having a "Girl's Night" at our house, so my plan was to make myself scarce by going elsewhere. Unfortuatly my two plans kind of fell through at the last minute. So in a semi-spontaneous act, I decided to just go into Boston and see if I could get a ticket to the Sox game tonight. If I was home alone I'd watch the game by myself, so I thought why not just go to the game by yourself. Given the recent slide I figured it would be pretty easy to get a ticket, plus I have never had really good seats at Fenway, so it would probably be my best chance to get a good seat at near face price.
Well the plan worked out, I was able to get to the park quickly, and I found a scalper who sold me a "right behind home plate" ticket for face value. I had a general idea where it was, and was fine with but was skeptical about its "Right Behind Home Plate"-ness. Well I was pleasantly surprised to find he was telling the truth, I was exactly in line with home plate, maybe 15 rows back. Plus it was on the aisle to boot.
The three college age girls eventually came and sat next to me. They told me they had sold the ticket to the scalper for half what I paid for it. So we both felt a little cheated, but they also told me they payed way more it in the first place. So I guess they where cheated the most. Tho I have a sneaking suspicion it wasn't there own money in the first place, as they told me they were going to the Pats game this week. How many college kids do you know, who all own coach bags and have all kinds of extra income to buy really expensive sporting event tickets, unless they are being supplemented by a rich daddy in the NuJe. (All the spoiled rich kids at URI were from New Jersey, so I just assume they all are).
No need to do a play by play of the game, but after getting into a 5 run hole, a lot of people in my area started leaving, saying the game was over. I was sticking around because 1.) I had no place to be and 2). I was going to get my money's worth. In the 8th inning the Sox had an excellent comeback to take the lead. I thought about all those who left, and called them suckers in my head. In the end I was the sucker. They ended up blowing the lead in the 9th and losing to the worst team in all of baseball.
I had no delusions they had a good shot to make it to the playoffs, but if they can't even take a come from behind win, from the Royals, I mean they are really done.
Still I saw a pretty exciting game from good seat. Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever be able to go back the bleachers again.

12:53 pm - Guilt Trip Entry
|
Ok Ok Ok, Here's a post.
So I had a birthday a few weeks ago. I feel a little older just because of the number (27), but not for any real reason. I have had alot of people who are younger then me tell me I'm old, since I have turned 27.
My actual birthday wasn't too eventful, as it was on a Monday. So I just went to work, and relaxed at home afterwards.
The weekend before I did go to my parents (in RI), for lobster and cake. A very excellent combination in my opinion. And also went out with Amy's parents for an excellent Portuguese giant beef kabob, and Flan. So I guess the main focus of my birthday celebration was eating.
As for gifts, Amy got me a Car GPS Navigator, that I had no real specific reason for needing, except that I wanted a toy. Its fun, and it has come in handy several times since I got it.
It has the option of giving directions in several languages, including both US English and UK English. In UK English the computerized voice has a slight accent to it. I've left it in UK mode, as with many things the presents of a British accent makes it seem fancier. The only difference I've noticed is it told me to enter a "Roundabout" (rather then a rotary) the other day. I was hoping it might throw out the occasional "Turn Left, Pip Pip".
I also got some power tools, and a blow torch, from mine and Amy's parents, because I fancy myself a handy man, as I have been a home owner for almost two years.
Labor Day weekend was much more eventful. Friday we saw a comedy show with some of the comics from this season's Last Comic Standing which was funny. Saturday we went to a BBQ, which the weather ended up holding out for. Sunday we have the "good" fortune of having Red Sox's tickets. So we got to sit in the rain, and watch the Sox's lose a really boring game. Monday was better, in that we got some good Portuguese cacoila sandwiches at a festival in RI, and the weather was nice. (Amy and her family have kind of got me hooked on Portuguese food, it you haven't noticed)
In other news, we are going on a weeks vacation at the end of the month. But I think I'll saving talking about that for another day. Leave you wanting more....

9:57 pm - it's Amy, posting for Jeff
|
I dont normally frequent Live Journal (in fact, I typed LJ and felt like a poser, and so, deleted), but Jeff was telling me about Jesse's horrible horrible horrible internet fiasco and so I signed in (do you "sign in" to Live Journal?...I dont even know) to read up on the incident. It's horrible Jesse, I'm not being facetious, I used to work for a company with an internet Gestapo, it sucked.
ANYWAY... I noticed Jeff hasnt updated in months. I think this is piss poor. You should all complain, or sign a petition, to get him kicked off.
current mood: embarrassed

9:25 pm - Is it August Yet
|
July is trying to kill me. Time for some straight narrative bitching.
The month started out pretty good with a long weekend. Then it all started going downhill on July 4th.
It began with me doing a few load of laundry on the 4th. My last load had finished drying right before I was about to go to bed. So I pulled it out to find a pen had gone in the dryer and covered all the clothes and the dryer itself with ink.
There was so much ink On the dryer we were afraid that it would come off onto future loads, so we tried to find a way to clean it off. Through trial and error Amy found the only think that even touches it is Acetone. Any one that's work with acetone knows its pretty harsh stuff. After about 10 minutes of my head being in the dryer with the acetone I had lost all feeling in my face. I decided I probably should stop for now and space out the cleaning over a few days.
So Monday comes around, I'm planning on coming home to do one last Dryer cleaning, and do some laundry as we are starting to run low. My house had other plan, I walked into find about a inch of water in half of my kitchen. My fridge icemaker water line had broke, and flooded the kitchen. Which in turn leaked down into the basement, ruin some drywall, a rug, a comforter, and some other bedding.
On Tuesday, I come home to find the roofers (in the middle of all this our roof started to be re-shingled), had drop something on my satellite dish, and damaged in two places. So much so it was no longer working. I was able to get it working again with the help of some duct tape. But needless to say I am pissed. I end the night but finally cleaning the dryer, and purchasing a dehumidifier (they are surprisingly expensive) to get the basement in order.
Today things are starting to get a little better. The basement is almost all dried out. I was able to build a temporary stand for my Dish, so I can bring it in when work is being done. Since the dryer is back in order, I throw a load of clothes into the wash and head up stairs. A few minutes later, I hear the sound of pouring water. I quickly run to the basement to find the my washer drain hose had popped off, and REFLOODED THE BASEMENT.
It was pretty easy to get cleaned up this time because the towels, mop and wet vac were already in place. I fixed the washer and finished the clothes, which are in the dryer. For the record, if they come out of the dryer cover in ink, I can't be held responsible for whatever I do next.
And while I'm complain, but how f-ed up is it that a 4 ton cement tile fell on a car. I feel really horrible for that family. Alot of lawsuits are frivolous but I think the husband should get about a billion dollars. The low quality of the Boston tunnels was always kind of a running joke, the whats coming out now is pretty scary.
Oh well, here's to hoping next week is better.
current mood: Tired yet slightly homicidal current music: cautiously listening to sounds from the basement
